This is not the first blog I have attempted, not the second or third. I have lost count at this point.
My goal is to take a few weeks away from social media. A hiatus, I am sure, as the all and connectedness social media brings is unparalleled – or is it? I have the feeling that I am becoming unconnected from the world, while being ever more plugged into my screens.
What happened?
At the beginning of 2021, I began a new remote position as a graphic designer. I was (and am) elated to be using this creative part of myself, and for a company that does thoughtful work for clients I can get behind. We work with non profits and local businesses alike. It’s feel good work.
I sit at a computer to work all day, periodically checking my phone in case someone has suddenly decided they were thinking of me. Sometimes when I’m extra tired I put a movie on for my kids after dinner. I spend my evenings browsing through my Instagram and Facebook feeds. BUT. It’s more than that, I started spending my mornings doing the same. And, recently, I downloaded a few mindless games. I like to tell myself that they are good for my mind, challenging. Matching games, crosswords, Solitaire, a bubble popper (?). Are they? Isn’t my brain challenged enough? Must it always be processing and doing and working? I’m sleeping less all of the sudden. My eyes hurt. I’m lacking motivation to accomplish the project I have spent years dreaming about.
I’ve decided to give my brain (and my eyes) a break.
The Plan
When my husband is at work, my phone is my gateway to him. We send each other silly memes, message, video chat, send pictures and sweet “I’m thinking of yous”. However, my husband is coming home for three weeks, and I have decided now is the time to try it out.
I’m not looking it at so much as
I do still plan to use social media to post these entries, but limit my use to this account. This is what I want to grow. This is where I want to focus my energy. THIS is my future.
So, here it goes.
